Germany has a population of over 82 million people (making it the second most densely populated nation in Europe), and is officially the "Federal Republic of Germany" (Bundesrepublik Deutschland). It was divided into East Germany and West Germany in 1949 by the Berlin Wall, which was demolished in 1989. Since its unification, Germany has become the leading European economic power and one of the richest countries in the world.

Most German food is imported, but fruit is an important crop. Famous German specialities include Schnitzel, Sauerkraut and Bratwurst; German cuisine often consists of savoury meat and potato dishes, but it is also the home of the Black Forest Gateau(Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte).
